Update & RPG Maker Bundle

Unfortunately, I haven’t been working on this game very much this week. My nightmares stopped once I stopped taking my medication, but now I’m passed out for 12-15 hours a day and my appetite is dead. I haven’t found much energy to work on anything, so I think I’ll just make do with my nightmares so I can find the energy to take up my plan. Namely, my commissions, 1,667 word count, 1 sprite, and background thumbnails…

Behold my brother’s artistic skills!

I did manage to program a feature I wanted to include– a side-scrolling exploration system where you run around a map interacting with objects– but there’s a memory leak so I’ll have to rewrite it. It’d be cool to show this off with .gifs, but it’s not ready.

Faeran’s conversation events are finished, though, and Rima’s are half finished, at 78 out of 96 scenes.

By the way, BundleStars has an Ultimate Game Makers bundle out if people want to play around with that. RPG Maker XP ($24.99) is part of the $2.99 tier, while RPG Maker VX Ace ($69.99) is at the $7.99 tier. Both are really nice. There’s also RPG Maker MV, the latest installment released just this October, but it’s still at full price at $79.99.

Anyway, the reason I mention the RPG Maker bundle is because people were mentioning trying something new to combat depression, and luckily for me, this came out. If people are interested, why not try it out, too? It’d be great to have more games to play!

Conversation Topics

  • Yue’s conversation dialogues. Every month, speaking to Yue gets you a unique but short dialogue, although some scenes don’t appear if you don’t have high enough affection.
  • Sho’s conversation dialogues.
  • Ali’sakir’s conversation dialogues.
  • Reziel’s conversation dialogues.
  • Tiberus’s conversation dialogues.

58/92 scenarios completed! Faeran, Rima, and Sitri are all that’s left.

Conversation Topics
How do people feel about conversation topics? Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 1, 2, and 3 had things like that, where if you’re lucky, you’d have the opportunity to ask a character questions like, “What’s your favorite ____”, “Interests”, and “Aspirations” when you’re walking home with them. You’d also get the opportunity to ask really interesting questions like, “Have you ever thought of falling in love?”, “What do you think about kissing?”, and “What kind of girl do you like?” at really high affection points.

Sprites & Minor Characters

ssDoing some sprite work of minor characters. As much as I like otome art, I don’t think the style works very well for the over-the-top reactions in this game. So instead of mimicking it completely, I’ll just stick to my own art style and just integrate all the stylistic things I like. 😀

Also, NaNoWriMo is over at the end of the day! I made it to 40k words, but I don’t think I can manage the 10k words left today. Still, let’s see how close I can get.

The Plan
I really want to continue to write scenes, so I’m going to keep up the 1,667 word pace for this month as well. At the same time, I’m also in a drawing mood, so I’m going to try for one sprite and three background thumbnails a week, at least until I get my commissions completely finished. Progress will be slow for the meantime, but I’ll try to have something to show at the end of the week while I work on commissions and crank the first draft out.

I’ve also decided the Royal Army doesn’t accept female soldiers, so I’ll be scrapping them. Originally, I had them in because equality, but, ultimately, it doesn’t make sense in this world no matter how much I want it to. Women will just have to make do with being medics if they want to be a part of the Delphine Army.fsoldiers

Doodle & Violence

I’m slipping with my wordcount for NaNoWriMo. I guess 30k is my limit; the same thing happened last year, too, haha! There’s still some time left, so I’ll do my best to catch up anyway. I’ve been very unhappy with my writing style lately, though, so it’s really impeding with my ability to sit down and write. Actually, I’ve been generally unhappy with everything for a while now, from my art, to my writing, to my projects… I’ve been feeling very inadequate, so I don’t want to work on anything.

My mental health also hasn’t been very good the past month. On top of bouts of deep depression, I’ve also been having continuous nightmares, and I’ve recently been having panic attacks. Things aren’t particularly good right now, but it could also be exacerbated by the fact that I’m writing a first-person war story.

This might be an opportune time to warn people that– despite all the fluff and happy scenarios– this is a game about characters in a war, so expect a ton of violence. In death endings, the scenes aren’t fade-to-black. It won’t be “scissors-in-your-eye-you-can-feel-it-scrape-your-skull” level of violence or detail, but there’ll probably be enough detail to feel a blade gliding across fingers or come to the sudden realization that the legs below your knees are now gone. There’s no gore in the CGs, and– at most– there’ll be a little blood or everything gets censored with shadows, but the writing could get pretty bad.

But I’m not even granted a chance to plead for my life.

The cold blade glides across my neck. A stinging pain radiates from my throat, but worst of all is the horrible sensation of air wafting into a place it shouldn’t be able.

My lungs work desperately to expel the fluid invading my body. Every cough I make, every horribly gargled choke I make, a mist of blood sprays from my lips and the hole.

— But it’s hopeless. No matter how much I cough out, more starts streaming in.

I can’t breathe.

Air. I need air!

My hands claw at his arms. The more the warm blood slides down my throat, the more desperately I want to breathe, and the faster my hands search for an opening from the iron grip keeping me pinned to his breast.

Anyway, the violence is to the point where I’d feel uncomfortable having teenagers play the game, at least when it comes to Part II. Then again, people can be very robust. I don’t know. I’m easily affected by violent scenes and sad scenarios. Maybe my scenes aren’t even written well enough to evoke horror or fear or disgust. :’)

So, like, how well do you guys tolerate violence in the things you read and the games that you play? Especially considering that this is a war story? What scenarios are okay with you, and what scenarios aren’t, if any? Just curious.

MoD: Character Updates

Using the character poll, I ended up changing a few characters’ personalities. The characters that’ll be different in the demo are:

  • Yue
  • Rima
  • Sitri

Now that I’ve had a chance to write more events for them, I’ve become more secure in writing them. As a consequence, their personalities will turn out a bit different than what’s presented in the alpha. Hopefully the changes’ll be made for the better and the characters turn out stronger and more concrete!

More fleshed out? Maybe. More likeable? Maybe not.

In other news, I’m also working on finishing up the Starlight Festival scenes right now. The main character can decide to spend it alone, which used to be a prerequisite for the secret character. Since the secret character can’t come out and spend it with the main character, being from another country and all, the main character will have the opportunity to date a minor character during the Starlight festival, instead! Unfortunately, this means you’re not actually allowed to spend the festival day alone.

Wow! More romantic interests!

Yssid (the guy from Ruwich) and Benedict (a major minor character in Part II) are the two options. The giant Yssid will only be available if Aleo goes to Ruwich, while not attending Ruwich gets you the sweet and angelic Benedict.

It’s not going to be possible ending up with them, but it’s more interesting than writing a route with the main character monologuing all by themself for 100 screens. I’m also considering a female interest, but that’s still up in the air.

Commercialization of MoD

NaNoWriMo is going really well for me so far. I’ve broken the 300,000 word count, which I’ve been trying to reach since last year. Hopefully I’ll reach the 50,000 goal, and Part I will finally be finished! I’ll still need to do a second draft so the entire work is up to the same standard as the new scenes I’m writing, but afterwards, I’ll start looking for editors.

Also, I haven’t officially announced it, so here goes:

Magicians of Delphine will be commercial.

NaNoWriMo 2015 & Writing updates

S-So I was completely unable to write 4,000 words a day, but that’s not a surprise. That’s like 5 scenes everyday for VNs that mainly consist of dialogue. But it’s NaNoWriMo now, so I’ll at least attempt to write 50,000 words this month, too, just because I should.

For Magicians of Delphine, I think it’s important to mention that I’m changing the writing style. The writing so far has been mostly immediate and very dialogue heavy, but I’m going to slow down the writing just a little by breaking up the dialogue with a few sturdy lines of prose. Hopefully this will be okay.

Here’s a romantic scene for Tiberus. If anyone’s got any critique, I’m totally open to it. Is the pacing okay? Does the scene linger too long? Am I abusing descriptions? Did it give people dokis (or has the potential to give you dokis) or did you feel nothing?

I figure with that last strike, it’d be the end of his forehead flicking shenanigans, but to my surprise, the general leans in.

I see for a moment the lashes of his eyes nearly brushing against his cheek, the strong cut of his jaw, the coil of his ear. A faint scent fills my nostrils, something like cinnamon and cedar wood, as the general draws close, not to hold me, but to speak in my ear.

In the instance before his face finds its way to my side, I catch his eye and note with a strange exhilaration that he was leering.

Tiberus “Perhaps a harsher punishment is in order.”

His voice is gentle, almost a whisper. His warm breath tickles my ear, and my face grows hot. I can’t help but recoil, my hand jumping up to my ears, my heart throbbing in my chest.

That… That was a threat just now, wasn’t it? But if that’s the case, why didn’t it sound like a threat?

The low lull of his voice, the mysterious look in his eyes before he leaned in…

I don’t understand. I’m confused. I don’t understand anything: not myself, these feelings, the general… And for some peculiar, twisted reason, I am absolutely, unequivocally enjoying every moment of this strange torture.

Panaderia: Ensaimada‘s script is about 90% done! I’m so close to finishing the first draft, I’m so excited. This game’s humor gets really weird sometimes and I’m worried the jokes’ll be lost on people, but eh… Hopefully people will still get a few laughs from it.

I’m not looking forward to working on the programming, though, haha.
